Arizona: Phoenix serial killer suspect arrested

Authorities say a suspect has been arrested in series of shooting attacks in Phoenix past year that left at least seven people dead and two others wounded over a four-month period.

Police say Saucedo killed nine people and carried out 12 shootings from August 2015 to July 2016, gunning down victims after dark as they stood outside their homes or sat in their cars.

It wasn't until after Aaron Juan Saucedo, a local laborer had been picked up in April 19 that they were able to piece a string of unsolved murders which had taken place between March and July previous year.

Holly Cortes, who lives a few doors down from the house where one of the victims was fatally shot, said she was relieved police made an arrest.

Saucedo, 23, is accused of carrying out the separate murders which police previously described as the work of a serial killer.

The Phoenix police chief and mayor appeared alongside other top officials including the county's top prosecutor to announce the break in a case that had appeared largely stalled in recent months as leads and tips dried up.

Last month Saucedo was arrested and held on a $750,000 bond on suspicion of murdering 61-year-old Raul Romero in August 2015. Authorities investigated Saucedo more closely and connected him to the other killings. But police say that Saucedo had no personal connection to the people he killed following this incident, and that they appeared to be picked at random, killed while entering their homes or lounging in their yards. They wondered if it was personal, but couldn't imagine who would hurt him.

- Diego Verdugo-Sanchez was shot dead on April 1, 2016 in front of his home. They allege Saucedo's crime spree began on March 17, 2016, when a 16-year-old boy was shot and injured as he walked down a street.

The weapon was the same type used in the freeway shootings - a High-Point 9mm pistol - but authorities say Saucedo had nothing to do with that case. Others were afraid to come forward because many are immigrants in the USA illegally or don't have their paperwork in order.

Another series of shootings past year put Phoenix on edge, but Williams said there's no evidence to connect Saucedo to the I-10 Freeway Shootings.

The suspect in a string of murders that took place in a Phoenix, Arizona neighborhood throughout 2015 and 2016 was arrested on Monday.

In court records from Saucedo's initial arrest April 19, Saucedo reported that he was employed full time working in "labor" at a company called Re-Bath.

The next shooting didn't happen until April 1, 2016, when Verdugo-Sanchez was fatally shot. Police added there were no connections between the victims in the case.

She said he preferred playing basketball with friends to partying.

The other victims, including a 12-year-old girl and a 55-year-old woman, seem to have been targeted at random.
