Trump Proposes an Excellent Slate of Appellate Judicial Nominees

Capitalising on an unusually high number of court vacancies, US President Donald Trump was on Monday set to roll out his first major tranche of judicial nominees in an exercise that will allow him to re-format the federal judiciary. The appeals court selections were described by the person on condition of anonymity.

According to The Times, Trump will nominate several judges from his campaign-era list of 21 potential Supreme Court justices.

Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen is headed to the federal bench, the New York Times reported Sunday.

MI judge David McKeague last month announced he would take "senior status" on the federal appeals court, a form of semi-retirement that created another vacancy for Trump to fill. Before that, she clerked for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, among other roles after graduating from Northwestern University School of Law.

Among the nominees to be announced tomorrow are two state supreme court justices Trump had identified as potential U.S. Supreme Court nominees: Justice Joan Larsen of MI and Justice David Stras of Minnesota, who are to be nominated to open seats on the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 6th and 8th Circuits, respectively.

President Trump's other appellate nominees are equally impressive: attorneys Kevin Newsom for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and John Bush for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and perhaps most notably Notre Dame law professor Amy Coney Barrett for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
