Born in Nepal's western Myagdi district, Sherchan stood atop the mountain in 2008, becoming the oldest climber to reach the summit of the mountain at the age of 76.

His record was broken in 2013 by 80-year-old Japanese climber Yuichiro Miura.

Kathmandu: An 85-year-old Nepali man attempting to become the oldest to climb Mount Everest died at the base camp on Saturday, a hiking official said, the second climber to die in a week while preparing to climb the world's highest mountain.

The president of Nepal Mountaineering Association described Mr Sherchan's death as a "great loss for the whole mountaineering community".

His death has sparked calls for an age limit to be set on climbers.

Sherchan, a father of seven, grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of six, died of altitude sickness at base camp on Saturday, an official said.

Dinesh Bhattarai, who heads the Tourism Department, said the government was seriously discussing an upper age limit. The cause of death was still unclear, and the autopsy result will be available in a few days.

Before leaving for the mountain last month, Sherchan told The Associated Press that once he had completed the climb and became famous, he meant to travel to conflict areas to spread a message of peace.

Hundreds of climbers have died on Everest alongside the more than 4,000 who've successfully summited the world's highest mountain since 1953.

A government minister and fellow climbers were also among those who paid their respects before the body was cremated. Speed-climber Ueli Steck, of Switzerland, died just last week as he prepared to climb Mount Everest.

"Doctors said that he died of natural causes".

At a community center, his family, friends and supporters offered flowers and a colorful scarf as Buddhist monks chanted a religious hymn and burnt sandalwood incense.

Among those who turned up to pay their respects to Sherchan were fellow climbers and a government minister. An avalanche killed 16 Sherpas in 2014, and another avalanche killed 19 climbers and injured 61 a year later.
