Motive for University of Texas stabbings unclear

One person is dead and several others are injured after a stabbing on the University of Texas campus in Austin. When an officer ordered White to drop to the ground he followed directions and was taken into custody.

Here's what we know so far. One student was hospitalised in that attack.

Another student, Ray Arredondo, says he was walking to his auto when a mass of students near the gym started running.

At a news conference Tuesday, authorities said White suffered from mental health troubles and had been involuntarily committed for treatment in another city.

The woman didn't know Harrison Brown but was nearby when he was stabbed. She saw him walk up to a guy, grab him by his shoulder and stab him in the back. Texts to students showed a almost 30-minute lag between the arrest and warning, even though city and county emergency offices were tweeting about the incident when they first responded. He said officers arrived at 1:48 p.m.

White was armed with a Bowie-style hunting knife.

Kendrex White told police, "If I did something I don't remember then I want to be told".

Carter said there was no evidence to suggest a particular motive.

The 21-year-old suspect, identified as Kendrex J. White, surrendered to police.

White has been charged with murder, a first-degree felony.

A lady Austin police Jennifer Herber said that a suspicious now in custody.

Authorities do not have information to support that theory.

"None of the victims in this case were wearing anything that would indicate they were members of a fraternity", Chief Carter said. Police do not believe this was a targeted attack or that it was a conspiracy. An additional one or two people have minor injuries and have not been taken to the hospital, according to ATCEMS.

The man police say stabbed four University of Texas students, killing one, says he has no memory of the attack. All of the victims seemed to be students.

A friend of Brown's recalled the moment his pal was attacked.

"The news of Harrison Brown's (GHS Class of 2016) passing is heartbreaking There are no words adequate enough to express the sorrow felt by Graham ISD and the community of Graham for this loss".

KVUE's Michael Perchick spoke with Graham High School's principal. "There was someone standing next to him yelling, 'get away!'" she said.

"I have been briefed by the Department of Public Safety on both incidents, and have also talked to University of Texas at Austin President Greg Fenves". Fenves described him as a talented musician who had not yet decided on a major.

Although he was interested in many things, Fenves said Brown "wanted to follow his passion in music". "The only thing I request is we send more thoughts and prayers to Harrison's family and everyone else who was a part of this", said Bayliss, whose family stood close by.

A separate GoFundMe page for Brown, the slain student, has exceeded its $100,000 goal by almost $22,000, funds meant to assist the family with burial costs and related expenses. Go here to donate.
