ISIS Raid in Afghanistan Leaves at Least 2 US Service Members Dead

The Islamic fundamentalist political movement which has been in the country for over a decade now have also said that while focusing on creating a base, they would also focus on military assaults on coalition and Afghan security forces.

Although military officials say the group is far smaller than it was at its height in 2015, an estimated 600 to 800 militants located mainly in remote mountainous areas have proved to be a deadly adversary.

Nicholson has called for thousands of additional troops to help prop up the Afghan military, which is struggling to hold off the Taliban and an array of other militant groups.

The intensification of fighting continues to also inflict high numbers of casualties on civilians, according to United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, or UNAMA.

"We're going to keep going until they're defeated in 2017", Nicholson told reporters in Kabul this month.

US citizen detained in North Korea
The North has been accused of holding Americans on what many see as dubious charges in order to use them as diplomatic leverage. PUST confirmed Kim's arrest, saying he was detained as he was about to leave the country after a visit of several weeks.

According to USA estimates, Afghan security forces, which have suffered thousands of casualties, control less than 60 percent of the country, although the insurgents have so far been unable to capture any major provincial centers.

Over 1,800 USA troops have been killed in action in Afghanistan since the US first invaded the country in 2001 to combat al-Qaeda.

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis, right, and U.S. Army General John Nicholson, left, commander of U.S. Forces Afghanistan, hold a news conference at Resolute Support headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, April 24, 2017.

The US has around 8,400 troops in the country with about another 5,000 from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Earlier this month, the American military dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb on Islamic State group hideouts in eastern Afghanistan, killing almost a hundred militants. Those losses accounted for about 25 to 30 percent of ISIS-K's total size, he said at the time, and reduced its foothold in Afghanistan from nine districts to three.

Google Adds Phishing Protection To Android Gmail App
On Wednesday, a huge phishing scam emerged and started spreading around like nobody's business but Google has managed to fix it. The scam spread so quickly and comprehensively that "Google Docs" was the nationwide top trend on Twitter by 4:30 p.m.

The attack also illustrated the troubles facing Afghan forces in containing the Taliban insurgency since most North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops left in 2014, leaving a training and advisory mission.

The bombing triggered global shockwaves, but was criticised by observers who questioned its use against a group that is not considered as big a threat as the Taliban. In the latest attack, the Taliban disguised as Afghan army soldiers slipped into the compound of the 209 Corps in northern Afghanistan's Balkh province.

Nicknamed "the mother of all bombs", the GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb was dropped from an American MC-130 aircraft in the Achin district of Nangarhar province, bordering Pakistan.

The U.S. -led mission in Afghanistan is focused on two objectives: training Afghan security forces to confront the Taliban and conducting aggressive counter-terror missions targeting ISIS-K and the host of other al-Qaida affiliates who are active there.
