'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2': Marvel's 15th straight No. 1 opening

Marvel continues its winning ways at the box office as "Guardians of the Galaxy Vols. 2" was the fifteenth film from the studio to hit the number one spot at the domestic box office.

James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the follow-up to the 2014 box office smash that sent waves across the world when it grossed more than $777.3 million globally, opened in the USA this weekend with a galactic $145 million return, making it not only the top movie in the country, but also Marvel's fifteenth straight No. 1 opening domestically, according to CNN Money.

The once little-known property has become a blockbuster part of the Marvel empire, thanks in part to a pitch-perfect oddball cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper. It kicked off Hollywood's summer movie season with something the movie business has been lacking: a sequel more successful than the original.

"The strength of the brand is a license to take risks", Hollis said, noting that the "Guardians" films are the ideal counter to any notion of superhero movie fatigue.

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" finished fifth with an estimated 4.94 million USA dollars in its eighth weekend.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", $145 million ($124 million international).

Finally falling to No. 2 this week is "Fate of the Furious", bringing in an estimated $8.5 million and moving up a few slots on the all-time worldwide box office list. Sitting nicely between The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142M) and Furious 7 ($147M), the film managed to grab the 17th biggest weekend debut of all time.

The worldwide weekend of the Marvel's latest release took in a strong 123.8 million US dollars for a global weekend of 268.8 million USA dollars. The eighth installment in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise has pulled in 207.1 million USA dollars to date in North America. What's more, outside of the box office marketing and merchandizing for the film has been pretty phenomenal, bolstered by the unusually strong involvement of James Gunn himself.

Israel Rebukes Sweden Over UNESCO Vote
The prime minister made special mention of Italy for being the first to announce that it would vote against the resolution. Palestine was recognised as a full member of Unesco in 2011 despite intense opposition from Israel and the US.

Third place went to "The Boss Baby", with $6.2 million in receipts. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. As for the domestic numbers Fate now ranks fourth in the series but is expected to leap frog Fast Five ($209 million) within the next two days and Fast & Furious 6 ($238 million) by the end of its theatrical run.

How To Be A Latin Lover, starring Salma Hayek, Eugenio Derbez, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and veteran beauty Raquel Welch, seduced its way into fourth with $5.3 million, pushing its total to $20.6 million.

The Disney blockbuster "Beauty and the Beast", starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, hauled in another $4.9 million, taking it to almost half a billion dollars in ticket sales in North America during its two-month run.
