Five Charts Show Macron Victory Partly Priced In

Le Pen's performance dashed her hopes that the populist wave which swept Donald Trump into the White House and led Britain to vote to leave the European Union would also carry her to France's presidential Elysee Palace. That was a much bigger gap than the last polls suggested which had Macron at 62 percent.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said that Merkel extended her warm wishes to Macron over phone late on Sunday, while describing the decision of the French voters "a clear signal of dedication to Europe", reports Sputnik. She had placed third in the 2012 presidential vote, underscoring a growing acceptance for her fierce anti-immigration, France-first nationalism among disgruntled voters. Marine Le Pen sought to play down these links, even reaching out to Jewish parties and expelling her father from the National Front, while adopting a less bombastic and more measured approach in public appearances.

Many of those will have been supporters of the far-left maverick Jean-Luc Melenchon, whose high-spending, anti-EU, anti-globalisation platform had many similarities with Le Pen's.

Last Wednesday's televised candidates' debate, in which Le Pen constantly attacked Macron and seemed at times uneasy on economic issues, was also cited by analysts and supporters alike as a reason for the defeat.

Trump congratulates Macron for 'big win' in French election
Ms Le Pen credited herself with upsetting the French political landscape, creating a divide "between patriots and globalists". However, Macron prevailed with 66 percent of the vote to become France's youngest leader since Napoleon.

Le Pen called him up to congratulate him. After a highly anticipated election result, centrist Macron vowed Monday to "fight the divisions" in the country.

That means some 12 million voters did not vote in the election, three million more abstainers than in 2012, when the turnout was 80 percent. "The French have chosen a new president and voted for continuity".

Macron said he understood that some voters backed him reluctantly, simply to keep out Le Pen and her National Front party, which has a long history of anti-Semitism and racism. That's compared to 11 million in 2012.

Outgoing president Francois Hollande, who brought Macron into politics, said the result "confirms that a very large majority of our fellow citizens wanted to unite around the values of the Republic and show their attachment to the European Union".

Tucker, and Serge Ibaka are all supposed to be capable from three point range, and the team just hasn't gotten anything from them. DeMar DeRozan has been the star of the Raptors season, but in Game 2 he was held to just five points by Cleveland's JR Smith.

Le Pen, 48, had portrayed the ballot as a contest between Macron and the "globalists" - in favour of open trade, immigration and shared sovereignty - and her "patriotic" vision of strong borders and national identities. No one was shocked that she won a greater share of the vote than her father had - 21.30 percent to eventual victor Macron's 24.01 percent - or that the younger Le Pen improved upon her father's performance in most areas of the country, including in National Front strongholds in the south and the northeast.

Macron pulled in 89.7 percent of the Paris vote.

"There is today a new opposition leader and it's Marine Le Pen", top party official Jean-Lin Lacapelle told reporters.

The euro rose to as high as $1.1024 EUR=, its highest in about six months, before stepping back to $1.0973, 0.2 percent below late USA levels last week.

Macron scores 51 votes from Indian town Yanam's Telugu-speaking French citizens
Ms Le Pen credited herself with upsetting the French political landscape, creating a divide "between patriots and globalists". Macron has defied the odds so far, and will benefit from a groundswell of goodwill from most French voters and world leaders.

Mr Macron has been portrayed as a candidate for the young and globalised, with his blend of centrist policies - which include reducing corporation tax and being pro-EU - in stark contrast to Le Pen, who advocates economic protectionism. The two that Le Pen won - Pas de Calais and Aisne - in dark purple below, were both in the far north former Socialist stronghold.
