Famine could spread to 3rd South Sudan county

The regional director of UN's children agency stated "The horrifying fact that almost one in five children in South Sudan has been forced to flee their home illustrates how devastating this conflict has been for the country's most vulnerable".

The UN's child and refugee agencies said in a statement today that another 1 million South Sudanese children are displaced within the country, having fled their homes due to the civil war.

The East African nation's civil war, now in its fourth year, has blocked aid to some regions.

The UN said in a country of 12 million people, almost three in every four children do not go to school.

Shortstop Addison Russell tried to throw home, but it was wide and Hicks scored easily. "The sky is not falling for me". The Cubs ended the shutout on Jon Jay's groundout after Albert Almora Jr. walked and advanced on a double in the fifth.

The fighting that followed split the country along ethnic lines, spurred hyperinflation and plunged parts of the nation into starvation, creating Africa's biggest refugee crisis since the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

"The future of a generation is truly on the brink", said Leila Pakkala, UNICEF's Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa.

Another 1.4 million children are living in camps inside South Sudan.

"The horrifying fact that almost one in five children in South Sudan has been forced to flee their home illustrates how devastating this conflict has been for the country's most vulnerable", she said.

UNHCR and UNCEF also said more than a thousand children have been killed in the fighting. The organization's statement also pointed out that almost three-quarters of the Sundanese children are out of school - the highest out-of-school population in the world.

But South Sudan has denied that its soldiers attacked the United Nations peacekeeping base in Leer, a town in former Unity state.

South Sudan became the world's newest country when it seceded from Sudan in 2011 after almost four decades of civil war that crippled development and left some 2.5 million people dead.

At least 75,000 minors have crossed South Sudan's borders either unaccompanied or separated from their families.
