Donald Trump's concession on wall funding removes obstacle from spending talks

Donald Trump's concession on wall funding removes obstacle from spending talks

On Tuesday, President Trump insisted his stance on building a wall has not changed and that he is committed to his plan to build a wall along the Mexican border.

If the White House has clearly moved its position in the last 24 hours, are Republicans and Democrats now looking at the president as somebody who is a whole lot easier to deal with than they thought? Insurers want clear answers on the subsidies as they decide whether and where to participate in exchanges next year.

Donald Trump appeared determined Tuesday to score key victories to mark his first 100 days as president, as he seeks to boost border security, unveil tax reform plans and avert a government shutdown. That means Democrats and Republicans will have to agree on the bill's provisions by Friday, when funding for the government expires.

Trump turned again to Twitter: "The Wall is a very important tool in stopping drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth (and many others)!"

Last week, White House officials started bearing down on their congressional allies to get a $3 billion appropriation for the wall into the next spending bill, threatening to veto it without the funding.

Trump said Monday that he would consider getting his funding for the wall in the fall, instead of as part of the spending bill.

Some 850,000 Palestinians have been incarcerated since the start of Israel's occupation 50 years ago, Palestinian leaders say. The Palestinian lawmaker has been along with more than 1,000 prisoners on a hunger strike since April 17.

However, Republicans also insisted on increases in border security and defense spending, including money to fix existing fencing and new surveillance technology to patrol the almost 2,000-mile border.

"Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway sat with Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends" to discuss President Donald Trump's flexibility in insisting funding for a U.S. -Mexico border wall must be part of this week's spending bill in an effort to keep the government open.

Democrats seized on reports that Trump said during a meeting with conservative media on Monday that he could get funding this week or in September budget negotiations for FY2018, as a sign that he was caving on his priorities.

"The wall's going to get built, folks", Trump told reporters.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, who hasn't been shy about criticizing Trump, said that the president's understanding of Congress from Inauguration Day until now has improved "one hundred percent", and that Trump has done more outreach in 100 days than former president Barack Obama did his entire time in office. They think this has added to enormous leverage that they didn't feel that they had here at the Capitol until this week.

Democrats cheered Tuesday at news that Mr. Trump may delay a funding battle this week over $1 billion for construction of a wall along the USA southern border.

"I will say Secretary Kelly, formerly General Kelly, is doing an incredible job".

Democrats welcomed Trump's changed course, but it drew swift criticism from conservatives who support the wall as a way to curb illegal immigration, as Trump promised in one of the most prominent issues of his campaign.

The president, whose approval ratings have slid since he took office, will be marking 100 days in the job on that day. Senators and House members who must pass the measure will get little chance to read what all's in it before being called on to vote.

One reporter asked Trump when the wall will be built.

"I'm optimistic. I don't think anybody wants a shutdown."
