Australia to introduce stricter visa requirements for skilled workers

Announcing the decision to revoke the popular visa policy, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said that the step was taken to "put Australians first" by giving them priority for jobs.

A working visa in Australia just got a little tougher to acquire.

This visa programme offers temporary employment opportunity to foreign workers to work in skilled labour requisite sectors for a period of maximum four years.

In a press conference, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Immigration Minister Peter Dutton announced that migrants hoping to become Australian citizens will go through stringent English language tests that will include "reading, writing and listening" components.

The measures will be introduced immediately, but those already holding 457 visas will be exempt from any changes.

The public will be able to make submissions until June on how Australian values might be tested.

Mr Turnbull, who has been trailing in the polls for 13 months, said the government was "putting Australian values at the heart of citizenship".

Under the government's plan, the 457 visa will be replaced initially by a new temporary two-year visa created to recruit the "best and the brightest".

The move comes two days after Australia unveiled stricter visa requirements for skilled workers from overseas.

Unveiling the changes, Turnbull stressed that Australian citizenship was a "privilege" that should be "cherished".

"If you want a chance of succeeding in Australia, you need to be competent in English", said Turnbull. "We are protecting Australian jobs and promoting Australian values".

"We want people to demonstrate they have have worked, sent children to school... it's not an issue that is properly tested now", said Dutton.

The 457 visa, now used by about 95,000 foreign workers, will be replaced by a new temporary visa and the list of occupations that qualify for a visa will be reduced from more than 200.

The proposed changes will also mean permanent residents will have to wait four years before applying for citizenship.

On Tuesday, the government said it would replace a controversial visa scheme to make it harder for foreign nationals to work in Australia.

The 457 visa will be replaced initially by a new temporary two-year visa specifically created to recruit the "best and the brightest" in the national interest, Mr Turnbull said.

The citizenship test will have "new and more meaningful questions" about an applicant's understanding of and commitment to Australia's shared values and responsibilities.
