Leave.EU investigated over EU referendum spending returns

Today (21 April 2017) the UK's Electoral Commission has made a decision to start an investigation into Leave.EU's referendum spending. Having carried out an initial assessment of Leave.EU's spending on the referendum, it believes there are reasonable grounds to suspect that potential offences may have occurred.

Leave.EU has faced claims it failed to declare advice given by an American social media strategy firm. "We will be vigorously defending their allegations".

The political group founded by multi-millionaire Arron Banks may have broken the law before last June's European Union referendum, the independent body said. "We have answered all of their questions", he said in a statement.

Search for missing hikers in Grand Canyon being scaled back
The National Parks Service received an emergency alert from a personal locator Global Positioning System beacon Saturday evening. With its steep cliffs, almost 2,000 square miles and mesmerizing views, the Grand Canyon can be as unsafe as it is captivating.

It is linked to the United States billionaire Robert Mercer and Steve Bannon, Donald Trump's chief strategist.

In a statement, it said the inquiry would focus on whether the campaign group had received "impermissible" donations that it could not legally accept and whether its spending return was incomplete.

Companies and other corporate donors - including limited liability partnerships and unincorporated associations - have to be based and registered in the UK. "Once the investigation is complete, the commission will decide whether any breaches have occurred and, if so, what further action may be appropriate, in line with its enforcement policy".

The Leave.EU campaign was set up by millionaire Arron Banks in the hope of gaining the designation as the official Leave campaign in last year's referendum.

USA tells North Korea: We don't want a fight, don't start one
Earlier this year, China called on the U.S. and North Korea to give up something to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Tensions have been high between the US and North Korea as it continues to test rockets that could carry nuclear weapons .

What has the Leave.EU campaign's response been?

Mr Banks said this week he will be standing as a candidate for the Essex seat in this June's General Election.

The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. "How convenient just before Arron Banks stands to become an MP".

A spokesman for the commission said: "The Electoral Commission has begun an investigation into Leave.EU's EU referendum spending return".
