Federal bill on legalizing marijuana unveiled

Federal bill on legalizing marijuana unveiled

The Liberal government introduced long-awaited legislation Thursday to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, but numerous finer points and logistical questions remain unanswered or up in the air.

However, some Canadian doctors have expressed concerns that the prime minister's legalization plans may trivialize marijuana.

The government says advertising will be subject to restrictions similar to those affecting tobacco, but it does appear as if branding will be allowed. The proposed legislation will be carefully scrutinized by provincial governments, marijuana producers and a number of would-be distributors and sellers of marijuana that are all looking for a piece of the multibillion-dollar market.

Even if he's not allowed to sell it, Panjwani is still optimistic he'll be able to thrive in the recreational marijuana industry.

Mayor Greg Dionne said the city has been preparing for the move, but he points out that there's still a long way to go before council will need to craft its own policy. "But definitely, the perspective on it is changing". Canada joins Uruguay, the only other nation to have fully legalized recreational marijuana (Portugal has had great success with its decriminalization of all drugs).

It's too early to tell how Ontario will proceed with those regulations, however. The legislation will be reviewed in Parliamentary committees, where alterations could be made.

"This is quite a large undertaking", said Naqvi.

Adults 18 and older will be able to legally buy and cultivate small amounts of marijuana for personal use while selling the drug to a minor will become a serious new criminal offense. For instance, the minimum age for consuming alcohol varies across Canadian provinces.

After being brought in, it will be a specific criminal offence to sell cannabis to a minor. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said past year she wouldn't rule out the sale of marijuana at the popular Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) stores.

Shares of marijuana producers were trading lower following the announcement, though the stocks have seen a run-up in anticipation of legalization. However, crossing the border into the United States, where marijuana has only been legalized in eight states, including California and the District of Columbia, could prove challenging for Canadian pot smokers. "The Cannabis Act reflects an evidence-based approach that will protect Canadians' public health and safety".

Incoming batsman AB de Villiers (19) and Kohli then continued to punish the bowlers with some great show around the park. Last year's runners-up have got off to a miserable start with just one win in the ongoing Indian Premier League season.

Though eight US states have legalized marijuana to various extents, the drug remains illegal under federal law. Others have decriminalized it or effectively stopped enforcing laws against it.

It's expected to pass, according to news reports, giving Canada the most liberal marijuana laws of any country on earth.

Panjwani said he's already noticing an increase in American customers at his smokeshop.

Individual provinces would ultimately be the regulating authorities, but if local jurisdictions do not have a regulatory framework in place, the press release says Canadians could purchase cannabis online and have it shipped to them.
