A new high: Poll finds record support for pot legalization

Sixty-one percent of Americans think marijuana use should be legal, which is a five-point increase over 2016 and the highest percentage ever recorded, CBS News reported.

In the poll released on Thursday, 60 percent of American voters supported the legalization of marijuana.

According to a new Quinnipiac University national poll, USA voters say 60% - 34% "that the use of marijuana should be made legal in the US;" this is the highest level of support ever recorded for legalizing marijuana in a Quinnipiac poll.

"From a stigmatized, risky drug bought in the shadows, to an accepted treatment for various ills, to a widely accepted recreational outlet, marijuana has made it to the mainstream", said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Republicans and voters over 65 years old were the only subgroups to oppose legalized marijuana.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,062 voters from April 12-18 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.

According to this poll, an overwhelming majority of voters support the legalization of marijuana, as well as allowing adults to legally use marijuana for medical purposes if prescribed by a doctor. Support for marijuana legalization was up five percent compared to previous year, when 56 percent of Americans said cannabis use should be legal for adults. Only seven percent of Americans thought marijuana was more harmful, while 28 percent said both were equally harmful.
