Tillerson declares Iran nuclear deal a failure

The historic deal between Iran and six major powers restricts Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of worldwide oil and financial sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The U.S.is already engaged in a hot stand-off with a North Korea that continues to flout worldwide law by carrying out regular missile tests.

In response, North Korea said it may test missiles on a weekly basis, and warned of "all-out war" if the USA takes military action. "There would have been no way to get a deal if we lumped in everything else we don't like about Iran".

The White House is aware of "potential negative impacts" from a review ordered by President Donald Trump of whether lifting sanctions through the Iran nuclear deal was in USA national security interests, his spokesman said on Wednesday.

Iran has named 29 companies from more than a dozen countries as being allowed to bid for oil and gas projects using the new, less restrictive Iran Petroleum Contract (IPC) model, the oil ministry news website SHANA reported yesterday (2 January).

Cops shot in Paris may have been 'deliberately targeted'
The counter-terrorism office has opened an investigation into the shooting, the prosecutor's office said. Subway stations in the area were closed off on Thursday night while police secure the scene.

The other countries that were part of the deal - Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China, along with the European Union - remain supportive of the pact and would likely object to any re-imposition of American sanctions. But he said its "nuclear ambitions" remained "a grave risk to worldwide peace and security".

What is the Iran nuclear deal?

However, his predecessor Barack Obama argued the deal, between Iran and six world powers including China, Russia and the United Kingdom, was the best way to prevent Iran getting a nuclear weapon. "It fails to achieve objective of a non-nuclear Iran".

Mr. Trump, who considers himself a state-of-the-art dealmaker, dubbed the 2015 agreement "the worst deal ever negotiated" during his presidential campaign, raising the questions of whether he might kill the deal deal entirely.

How has the U.S. position changed?

Tillerson's remarks come just a day after it was reported that the administration notified Congress that Iran was doing everything they're required to do under the agreement.

In a formal notification required every 90 days to the US Congress-the first delivered since Trump's inauguration-Secretary of State Tillerson certified that, as of April 18, Iran was meeting its terms of the deal, which required it to cap its uranium enrichment, reduce its number of centrifuges by two-thirds and submit to global inspections to ensure compliance.

It was a signature foreign policy achievement for previous US President Barack Obama, but Trump has vehemently criticized the deal, without definitively saying that the US would unilaterally walk away from it.

"The U.S. Department of State certified to U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan today that Iran is compliant through April 18 with its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action", Tillerson said in a statement. If you break out of that deal, won't that send a signal to North Korea and other rogue nations that the US can't be trusted to keep its end of the bargain?
