Police seal off the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, France, after a fatal shooting in which a police officer was killed along with an attacker, Thursday, April 20, 2017. Two other officers were injured, as was a female tourist. Archive reports by French newspaper Le Parisien say that Cheurfi was convicted of attacking a police officer in 2001.

Hollande said a bystander was also struck by a bullet in the incident. Thoughts are with his family. The auto was abandoned at the scene.

Police have not identified a motive in the attack.

On June 13, two police officers were killed in front of their 8-year-old son at their home outside Paris.

Police raided the man's home in a Paris suburb after the violence on the bustling, world-famous boulevard.

"Immediately a man got out and fired on the police vehicle, mortally wounding a police officer", Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said. "Other policemen engaged and shot and killed the attacker", Brandet said.

The Arc de Triomphe monument and the top half of the Champs Elysees were packed with police vans, lights flashing and heavily armed police shutting the area down after what was described by one journalist as a major exchange of fire.

Another reportedly said they saw a man get out of a auto and begin firing a Kalashnikov rifle.
