One police officer killed, another wounded in Paris shooting

PARIS - One policeman was killed and another wounded in a shooting incident in central Paris on Thursday night, a police source said.

The suspect, who was shot dead by French police, was the subject of a "Fiche S" surveillance file and was on the radar of the French domestic security service DGSI, the source said.

A police spokeswoman told Associated Press that the gunman targeted police guarding a metro station.

Brandet says the police officers were "deliberately" targeted.

The Paris prosecutor's office said counterterrorism investigators are involved in the probe into the Thursday attack that left a police officer and the attacker dead.

The cause of the incident remains unknown, but media reports say that the police are investigating it as a possible terrorist act. At least one bystander is believed to have been injured in the attack.

The Islamic State group, which is being driven out of its areas of territorial control in Iraq and Syria by Western-backed coalitions and has hundreds of French-speaking fighters, claimed responsibility for the shooting via its Amaq news agency, naming the attacker as Abu Yousif al-Belgiki.

CNN could not independently confirm that claim. "I will not give it because investigations with raids are ongoing", Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters.

Police identified the attacker as a 39-year-old from a suburb in the east of Paris.

"We don't have a precise idea of the origin of the shots fired", he said.

A auto stopped at 102 Champs-Elysees, in front of a police van, ministry spokesman Pierre Henry Brandet said.

A man emerged from the auto and opened fire on the van with an "automatic weapon", killing one officer instantly, he said.
