MPs debate Prime Minister Theresa May's General Election call

Denying her decision to call for a vote on 8 June was driven by political "opportunism", the Prime Minister also insisted it would "strengthen our hand in negotiation with the European Union".

Britain's lower house of Parliament on April 19 voted 522 to 13 in favor of May's motion for the snap poll, easily securing the two-thirds majority of the 650-seat legislature required for the elections to go ahead.

Brok said that could help "so that we can conduct the negotiations professionally in the next 1 1/2 years to reach a sensible result that reduces the damage".

Until today, May had repeatedly ruled out holding an early election, saying there would be no national vote until 2020.

Before the campaign can formally begin, May needs lawmakers to vote by a two-thirds majority to dissolve Parliament and hold an election on June 8, three years earlier than scheduled.

"That would be in nobody's interest", May said.

Cleveland was in control for much of Game 2 , though a fourth-quarter comeback by in made things close in the final two minutes. The Cleveland Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 51-31 record, second in the Eastern Conference .

In contrast, nearly all the MPs in May's Conservatives party (325 out of 330) voted for the early election.

He told MPs earlier in the Commons: "We welcome the opportunity of a general election because it gives the British people the chance to vote for a Labour government that will put the interests of the majority first".

Despite Corbyn's bravado, his party is demoralized and divided under his left-wing leadership and is expected to fare badly.

May's Conservatives now hold 330 House of Commons seats and Labour 229.

While promising to run a "positive and optimistic campaign", she said the choice at the election was between her "strong and stable leadership" or a "coalition of chaos" led by Mr Corbyn.

She is seeking to increase her slim majority of 17 in the 650-seat Commons before the battles begin with the European Union over Britain's exit bill and future trade and immigration ties. The Lib Dems now have just nine seats in Parliament.

For the second year in a row, a police department in Minnesota sent a "warning" to smokers looking to celebrate 4/20. The Wyoming Police later tweeted that it is attempting to use humor to bring attention to substance abuse issues.

Several MPs across parties announced their decision not to contest the election, including former chancellor George Osborne, recently appointed editor of the mass circulation Evening Standard.

Mrs May replied: "I know it's taken you a little time to get the hang of these Prime Minister's Questions but I have to say to you that week in, week out you stand up and ask me questions and I respond to those questions".

Including the pledges in the manifesto would make it extremely hard for Remain-backing Tory MPs to rebel on the issues in House of Commons votes if the party wins the snap election on June 8 and as exit talks go on.

And Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood - whose profile received a major boost from her involvement in two of the 2015 broadcasts - said: "Theresa May should be empty chaired if she doesn't show up to any planned TV debates".

ITV has confirmed it will host a leaders' debate during the general election campaign, despite Theresa May's insistence that she will not take part. "But this is a prime minister who promised there wouldn't be one".

Liberal Democrat leader Farron said that broadcasters should hold debates anyway, with an empty chair in May's place.
