A MA prisons spokesman says he's not aware of any suicide note written by Aaron Hernandez before the former New England Patriots star hanged himself in his cell, but stresses that the investigation is ongoing.

CNN reports that authorities have confirmed that the former tight end committed suicide, hanging himself with a bed sheet.

Christopher Fallon, a spokesman for the prison, said officials are unaware of any suicide note.

The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that Hernandez's death is the first reported successful suicide by an inmate hanging a sheet from a window at the Shirley prison. He said officials had no reason to believe Hernandez might take his life, and if they had had any such worries, he would have been transferred to a mental health unit.

The Massachusetts State Police are on scene and the investigation continues.

Hernandez's lawyer, Jose Baez, said he will conduct his own investigation.

United Airlines will compensate all the passengers who were on a plane when a man was dragged off by airport officers in Chicago. United personnel had asked for volunteers to give up their seats for four airline employees who were needed in other cities.

He says Hernandez was looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence in the 2013 slaying of Odin Lloyd.

The determination of a cause of death cleared the way for Hernandez's brain to be released to Boston University as the family had wished to undergo testing as part of the university's concussion research.

The Patriots had no immediate comment. In this Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, file photo, New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez puts on a Super Bowl cap following the AFC Championship NFL football game against the Baltimore Ravens in Foxborough, MA.

He was a productive tight end for the Patriots for three seasons, catching 79 passes for 910 yards and seven touchdowns in his second year to help the team reach the Super Bowl. In 2012, he signed a five-year, $40 million contract extension.

There will be some who believe Hernandez killed himself knowing that by doing so, while his conviction for murdering Odin Lloyd was under appeal, he would die an innocent man, his record wiped clean.

As a result of the double murder ruling, the case that Hernandez was serving a life sentence for would've been automatically reviewed.

One of Aaron Hernandez's longtime friends says he's in shock and grieving after the National Football League star was found hanged in his prison cell. Prosecutors said he gunned them down after one of the men accidentally spilled a drink on him in a Boston nightclub.

As the hour of his death approached, the former National Football League star chatted on the phone with his longtime fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez.

His death was "a shocking and sad end to a very tragic series of events that has negatively impacted a number of families", said Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, who prosecuted Hernandez in the Lloyd case. A few days later, Hernandez shot another friend, Odin Lloyd, killing him in an industrial park a mile from that big, handsome house in North Attleborough.

In the Dorchester neighborhood where Lloyd grew up, a family friend of the victim wondered if Hernandez could no longer bear the weight of his crime and his squandered potential.

"I just think it got to him - the guilt", said Mixson Philip, 55. "Through thick and thin right or wrong we never left each other's side", Pouncey wrote on Instagram.

They're taking a look at them because this really is a sexual harassment enterprise. She continued, "They need to go to jail".

Baez declined to say whether he or the family believed brain damage from Hernandez's playing days led him to kill himself. "He just went through going through a double murder and being acquitted. That was a positive thing in our minds".
