Main suspect in Stockholm truck attack admits to 'terrorist crime'

In a court hearing, his lawyer confirmed the 39-year-old committed an act of terror.

The main suspect in the lorry attack in Stockholm on Friday that killed four and injured 15 has admitted committing a terrorist crime, his lawyer has said.

The suspected attacker was an asylum seeker who had his application rejected, Stockholm police said. The "Lovefest" vigil was a sign of unity against terrorism, two days after a truck attack on a busy pedestrian street which killed four people.

"His position is that he admits to a terrorist crime and accepts therefore that he will be detained", said lawyer Johan Eriksson.

The suspect, identified as Rakhmat Akilov, was detained a few hours after the attack on Friday and arrested on Saturday morning.

Akilov, who was known to intelligence services, had applied for residency in Sweden in 2014 but his application was rejected in December previous year, according to police. However, this man would remain in custody due to an earlier decision that he be expelled from Sweden, the authority said.
