At least 126 killed in Aleppo bus convoy bomb attack

An opposition activist group and a TV station run by Lebanon's Hezbollah say more than 3,000 people are expected to be evacuated from four villages as part of a population transfer that was briefly stalled by a deadly blast that killed scores.

The death toll in a terrorist attack on buses carrying Syrians evacuated from two government-held towns in the country's Idlib province has risen to at least 118.

Syrian rescue workers from the Civil Defence said that they had taken away at least 100 bodies from the site of the blast.

By late Saturday, monitors from the Syrian Observatory said the convoy near Aleppo was again under way, while official Syrian media said the first buses carrying Shi'ite evacuees had reached government safety in Aleppo.

Ahrar al-Sham, the rebel group that negotiated the deal, denounced the "cowardly" attack, saying a number of opposition fighters as well as government supporters were killed in the attack.

But doubts began to emerge soon afterward that not all such armaments or production facilities were declared and destroyed. On Tuesday morning a residential district in Chan Sheikhun in Idlib province was bombed and poison gas was released .

Syria state TV reported the transfer process resumed hours after the explosion, with dozens of wounded transported.

The explosion hit the al-Rashideen area, a rebel-controlled district outside Aleppo city where evacuation buses carrying almost 5,000 people from the northern rebel-besieged villages of Foua and Kfraya were stuck.

According to the same source, in his Easter Sunday address, Pope Francis condemned the attack, calling it "an ignoble attack on fleeing refugees".

On Saturday, a bomber targeted the buses as they waited in the militant-held al-Rashidin district on the outskirts of Aleppo to cross into government-controlled territory.

"Rebels say Damascus breached the terms of the deal, accusing the government of trying to bring out more loyalist fighters than agreed".

Evidence presented during Hayes' trial showed that Smith's 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was found loaded but unused inside his SUV. He said he took responsibility for actions by staying on the scene to wait for police and talking to them once they arrived.

Under the evacuation deal, more than 2,000 people, including rebel fighters, were granted safe passage out of Madaya, a town near Damascus besieged by government forces and their allies.

Earlier on Saturday, at the transit point where the buses from al-Foua and Kefraya were waiting, one resident said he was not yet sure where he would live.

Residents of Madaya and Zabadani, formerly summer resorts, joined the 2011 uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Shiite-dominated Iran has repeatedly raised concerns for the residents of Foua and Kafraya, who are mainly Shiites and were besieged by Sunni rebels. "They were evacuating under a deal contingent on residents of two pro-rebel towns being allowed to evacuate".

The buses had been carrying people from pro-government areas and from opposition towns. "Many people felt that they had been forced to leave", he said.
