Senate confirms Gorsuch to Supreme Court in historic vote

The GOP had refused to vet or vote for Judge Merrick Garland, whom President Barack Obama nominated to replace Scalia the following month, according to ABC News. But without a majority in the Senate, the Democratic attempted were futile, and McConnell, just Thursday, invoked what is known as "the nuclear option" to end the option of filibustering Supreme Court nominees through rewriting the Senate rules by a simple majority vote.

LGBTI groups are voicing disappointment and concern over the confirmation today of conservative judge Neil M. Gorsuch as the next justice of the US Supreme Court.

A Senate showdown is at hand over President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, and it could change the Senate and the court for years to come.

Mr Gorsuch, 49, was confirmed within 65 days of his nomination, but the battle to appoint another justice to the judicial bench began with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative darling, in February past year.

The 49-year-old conservative appellate judge from Colorado will ascend to the nation's highest court, filling the seat left vacant for more than a year since the death of Antonin Scalia.

He recalled an old film - "bees saal baad"- and said today's development was like a new film- "25 saal baad", which would finish in the next two years.

Gorsuch was confirmed Friday by a vote of 54-45 after the Republican majority mirrored a Democratic strategy employed in 2013 to lower the number of required votes to confirm judicial nominees. "The election is over and it's time for Washington to work together - as our constituents expect us to do - to fill the Supreme Court vacancy with this eminently qualified nominee", she said.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) cast the decisive 51st vote in favor of the nomination.

Gorsuch will take his seat in time to hear the last case of the Supreme Court's current session.

As Obama's remaining months in office wound down past year, he made the uncommon move of nominating a replacement for Scalia instead of waiting for the results of the then-upcoming election and allowing the next president to make a nomination.

Although Gorsuch had previously been unanimously confirmed by the Senate to a position on the Tenth Circuit back in 2006, most Democrats expressed their opposition to the nomination.

Both senators supported the filibuster and were angered by the rules change, dubbed the "nuclear option" because of the harm it would do to relations in the Senate.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell used the "nuclear option" to break the Democrats' filibuster with a simple majority vote.

The Supreme Court said Mr Gorsuch will be sworn in as the 113th justice on Monday in separate ceremonies at the court and the White House.

The Senate change, affecting how many votes a nominee needs to advance to a final confirmation vote, will apply to all future Supreme Court candidates as well. Scalia was appointed to the Supreme Court by then-President Ronald Reagan in 1986.
