Ruth Davidson Says She's Not Going To Stand In The General Election

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May won by a landslide the approval she wanted for a June 8 snap election as she seeks to strengthen her mandate ahead of Brexit negotiations.

"I think it's surprising the Prime Minister called the election at this time because previously she has said she wants to go until 2020".

The result easily surpasses the two-thirds majority of the 650 lawmakers needed to trigger an early vote.

But, a clause in that law means that if 2/3rds of MPs are in favour, Parliament can vote to have a general election.

Following his first keynote speech of the general election campaign, the Labour leader was asked whether he was considering or would rule out following the Liberal Democrats in backing a second vote on the exit deal.

"She was aware that she would face criticism after making her statement, but she also knew there was a small window of opportunity to call an election before the start of the Brexit negotiations".

Mrs May confirmed that changing the date of the 2020 election would prevent it clashing with what she called "the most crucial part of the negotiations".

"Let us put forward our plans for Brexit and our alternative programs for government and then let the people decide", May said.

Conversely, it is possible (perhaps likely given the current state of opinion polls) that the Prime Minister will secure a large majority in Parliament in support of her Brexit position.

Though May has been cautious in detailing her Brexit aspirations, traders think a big victory for her in the election could give her ammunition in dealing with those within her own Conservative Party who are urging a complete, "hard" divorce from the European Union - even if that means new tariffs and an exclusion from the bloc's huge single market. "We are still referring to Hard Brexit vs "Hard-er" Brexit, but now the likelihood of a cliff edge is further reduced, with Theresa May likely to gain a further majority, allowing for flexibility on the negotiations with the European Union".

Justifying the decision to call the election, Mrs May said: "The country is coming together but Westminster is not".

The government of the Irish Republic also expressed concern that the early election could damage the chances of resolving a political crisis in the British province of Northern Ireland.

Government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke by phone Tuesday with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

"Brexit isn't just about the letter that says we want to leave".

"Even though this outcome appears unlikely this time out, it remains a possibility and would represent the second major miscalculation by a PM in as many years", said David Cheetham, chief market analyst at XTB. The answer, as with pretty much everything in Britain right now, is Brexit.

Parliament will vote Wednesday on holding a June 8 election.

Britain's next national election is now scheduled for 2020, a year after the scheduled completion of two years of European Union exit talks.

The election announcement caused a rally in the pound, which had fallen since the Brexit vote, amid speculation that May will be returned with a stronger mandate.
