Patriots' say viral New York Times' White House photo was misleading

A visit to the White House is one of the greatest honors bestowed upon today's athletes.

The Patriots are the first team to visit the South Lawn for the traditional ceremony under President Donald Trump.

As we learned before the Super Bowl, Tom's mother, Galynn Brady, has been battling cancer over the previous year, so many are anxious that the "personal family matter" he skipped White House event for has to do with her. Brady released a statement saying he wouldn't be in Washington D.C. because of "family matters". It was reported during the week before the Super Bowl that his mother had been battling illness, which was later revealed to be cancer, for at least 18 months.

TRUMP: This Super Bowl victory was a complete team effort.

However players Devin McCourty, Martellus Bennett, Chris Long, Dont'a Hightower and LeGarrette Blount all made a decision to skip the South Lawn visit for political differences.

The Wednesday's ceremony at White House in Washington is expected to go on as planned, despite the news that the former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez hung himself in prison.

When asked during the off-season how he felt about teammates ruling out making a trip to the White House he said it is a great experience, and that it was never a political thing.

Most of the team will get together at the White House Wednesday to celebrate its Super Bowl win with President Donald Trump.

The Patriots, he said, "delivered iconic American sports moments that will last forever" in their comeback from 25 points down to win 34-28 in overtime.

Earlier in the day, Patriots tight end and class clown Rob Gronkowski crashed White House press secretary Sean Spicer's media briefing, offering to help. In 2005, only 27 Patriots showed up according to CSN New England, and 36 attended in 2004, both during the George W. Bush administration.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick confirmed he wrote Trump a letter of support before the election, but said it was personal and not politically driven.

One player made an impromptu appearance at a White House press before the official ceremony.

Defensive back Devin McCourty told Time Magazine: "I don't feel accepted in the White House".

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft, whose personal relationships with President Trump has been heavily reported on over the past year, were front and center as the President honored the Super Bowl LI Champs.
