New York City could raise price of pack of cigarettes to $13

New York City could raise price of pack of cigarettes to $13

The bill, introduced by Councilman Corey Johnson, who heads the City Council's Health Committee, anticipates that such a step will yield a 6.4 percent decrease in adult cigarette smoking, reducing adult cigarette use from 14.3 percent to 13.9 percent. He also wants to target licensing to reduce the number of tobacco sellers in New York City. The proposed move would make NYC home to the highest-priced cigarettes in the country.

The measure is part of a package of five Council bills supported by the de Blasio administration that aims to reduce the number of smokers by 160,000 over the next three years. The city now has about 900,000 smokers, including about 15,000 youths.

Pharmacies will no longer be able to sell tobacco products and the cost of a pack of cigarettes will be at least $13 if a series of bills passes in the City Council, officials announced Wednesday. The last time a NY mayor tried to tax citizens into making healthier choices (remember Bloomberg's soda tax?), it didn't pan out so well.

Contrary to the public health concerns that Cabrera raised, the same report said that the interest of public health is served by working to "promote the use of e-cigarettes, NRT and other non-tobacco nicotine products as widely as possible as a substitute for smoking in the United Kingdom". The South Shore had lowest rate of smokers on Staten Island at 19 percent. "We are going to change that by capping the number of licenses available in each community", de Blasio said. It would create a retail license for e-cigarettes. They also require residential building owners to formulate a smoking policy, which they will have to communicate to both current and prospective residents.

Another bill, by Councilman Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn), would prohibit pharmacies, or stores that contain pharmacies, from selling tobacco products.
