Neil Gorsuch First Day Cases Originalism Neal Katyal

Mr. Neal Katyal, who introduced Gorsuch to the Senate Judiciary Committee during the Supreme Court Justice's confirmation process, represented the town of Chester, New York, which was the petitioner of the case.

Not Gorsuch. He remained on the bench, but he did not ask Katyal any questions.

The justices opened their April session with a case presenting a technical but important question about appeals from decisions by the Merit Systems Protection Board, which reviews federal employees' claims that they were wrongly fired, suspended or demoted.

Gorsuch asked lawyer Christopher Landau four questions in a row, saying he was 'sorry for taking up so much time'. Justice Clarence Thomas, for example, has long declined to ask any questions during oral arguments, preferring to let the attorneys lay out their case. "What am I missing?"

Gorsuch thanked Roberts and the other justices for their warm welcome.

British PM May says no to general election TV debates
Critics of an early election accuse May of taking advantage of low ratings for the main opposition Labour Party. If the vote passes, parliament will dissolve on 3 May, 25 working days before the country goes to the polls.

Mr Gorsuch and his fellow justices will hear two weeks of arguments on the Trinity in the last stretch of their term set to conclude in June.

Democrats tried to block Gorsuch's nomination, but Republicans changed the Senate rules to keep the minority from being able to filibuster Supreme Court nominees. Trump was able to fill Scalia's vacancy only because Senate Republicans a year ago refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland.

Gorsuch was a less enthusiastic participant in the next two arguments, but he again focused on the "plain language" of the statutes in his questioning.

In a statement he said that before he came into office in 2016, "government bureaucrats were under orders to deny grants to people of faith who wanted to do things like make community playgrounds for kids".

In Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. v. Sebelius, Mr Gorsuch found that business owners with strongly-held religious beliefs are not required to provide insurance coverage for their employees' contraceptives.

New 'Australian Values' Test Planned for Citizenship
He said, while some notions of values were created to exclude some groups, aspirational values "encompassed most people". He said "people do feel singled out" and tests could "unfairly target" vulnerable migrants, such as refugees.

The cases involve employment and property disputes and the timing of securities class-action lawsuits.

Gorsuch appeared chummy with Sotomayor throughout the day's arguments, sharing a laugh at the start and end of the first case. He will be a key vote in many critical cases coming up.

Gorsuch, at 49 the youngest new justice in a quarter century, served for a decade on the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals before Trump nominated him in January.

NINA TOTENBERG, BYLINE: Gorsuch emerged from behind the red velvet curtains with his eight colleagues and took his seat at the far right of the bench where the court's most junior justice always sits, whatever his politics.

Town of Chester, New York v Laroe Estates is the case which could lead to the Colorado justice standing and walking out of the courtroom.
