How will the overhaul of H-1B visas affect businesses?

How will the overhaul of H-1B visas affect businesses?

President Donald Trump will be ordering a thorough review of the country's high-skilled immigration visa program Thursday after having signed an executive order Tuesday targeting the H-1B program.

The officials also said that 80 percent of the H1-B visa petitioners who enter the United States under the current visa programme are paid less than the median wage workers in their field.

"We are going to defend our workers, protect our jobs and finally put America first", declared Trump at a rally in Wisconsin. "Workers are often brought in well below market rates to replace American workers", the official said. "Right now, H-1B visas are awarded in a totally random lottery, and that's wrong". It instructs the agency to pay special attention to visas which should only go to highly paid, specially skilled applicants when there is a US deficiency.

The executive order aims to shift the visa program from a lottery system to targeting jobs with a high need for skilled workers.

Iran foreign minister says US must meet own obligations for nuclear deal
Mr Tillerson accused Iran of undermining U.S. interests in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen. But he said its "nuclear ambitions" remained "a grave risk to global peace and security".

Of the total number of visas issued, 65,000 are issued to skilled workers with a college degree and the remaining 20,000 to those with higher training.

Supporters from both sides of the political spectrum say that it is a step in the right direction for trade and immigration.

It directs federal agencies to propose reforms to the H-1B program that prevents the displacement of American workers.

What it does do is say the executive branch will follow the laws already on the books that require the government to buy American goods and to maximize the use of products made in the U.S.

US adds only 98000 jobs in March; Unemployment reaches 10-year low
With the unexpected decrease, the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level since hitting 4.4 percent in May of 2007. Hiring in the construction trades rose by only 6,000 in March after adding 59,000 jobs in February.

Others, however, think that the order either harms businesses or does not go far enough to help workers. "It's too little, too late".

However, the business community has voiced concerns that the revamp could hamper USA companies' ability to attract top talent and, in turn, hurt the president's pro-growth agenda.

Amid concerns over the US' changed H1B visa programme, India said today it was in touch with the Trump administration and making "full assessment" of its impact on Indian professionals.

"80 percent (of H-1B visa-holders) receive less than the median wage, and only 10 percent receive the median wage".

The state described the inmates' challenge as a last-minute delay that would "manipulate the judicial process". Supreme Court refused to reverse an Arkansas Supreme Court order minutes before his death warrant expired.
