Democrats hope to strike blow at Trump in Georgia congressional race

If any one candidate received 50 percent of the vote, they would win the seat outright; however, if no one reached that threshold, the top two vote getters would be moved to a runoff election scheduled for June 20.

He garnered 48 percent. Ossoff will face Republican Karen Handel, who had 19.78 percent.

Republican candidate for Georgia's Sixth Congressional seat Karen Handel speaks at an election night watch party in Roswell, Ga., Tuesday, April 18, 2017. "Democrat Jon Ossoff would be a disaster in Congress".

He issued a statement after the results were announced: "No matter what the outcome is tonight, whether we take it all or we fight on, we have defied the odds, we have shattered expectations". The suburban Atlanta district has drawn the attention of the political world for months, and both parties consider it the first true political referendum on Trump and congressional Republicans' performance in office. On Tuesday, however, voters in the affluent Atlanta suburbs turned out for a special election to hand a 30-year-old Democrat a whopping 30-point lead over his closest competitor.

"I am truly humbled by the faith and trust the people of Georgia's 6th District have placed in me". It hasn't elected a Democrat to the House of Representatives since the Carter administration, and it was Newt Gingrich's district when he was Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1990s. With the GOP having a single candidate to rally behind, this race now becomes exponentially easier for Republicans to win. But they have yet to enact major legislation to fulfill campaign promises. As financial backers lined up and nationwide buzz around Ossoff began to build, the Republican Party started getting very nervous and President Trump himself took to (where else?) Twitter to try and keep the seat under GOP control.

Dairy Experts: Trump's Promised Trade Changes May Not Come Soon Enough
Canada protects its dairy sector by putting high tariffs on imported products in order to keep prices high for its farmers. Despite Trump's promises to find a "solution" to the dispute, Stephenson said dairy farmers aren't holding their breath.

Ossoff has capitalized on anti-Trump energy while still trying to appeal to independents and moderate Republicans - his only path to victory.

"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support & eleven Republican candidates, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia", Trump tweeted. "Glad to be of help!" he wrote late on Tuesday.

A tweet just before polls closed read: "Just learned that Jon @Ossoff, who is running for Congress in Georgia, doesn't even live in the district".

"The reason is clear: voters are rejecting Trump and his policies".

Democrats failed to pull off a win in a special House election in Kansas' 4th District last week, so surely they'd do better in Georgia's 6th District.

Williams' spokeswoman, Kelly Bush Novak , ended any doubts in an email to the Associated Press . So yes, technically, Serena Williams won the Australian Open while carrying a child.

It has many well-educated voters who are reliably Republican but frustrated by Trump.

But even from the beginning of the special election campaigns, there were signs that the district is changing. "They spent $8.3 million dollars and threw everything including the kitchen sink at it, and lost".

Ossoff is an untested candidate.

"We want everybody who is supportive of Republicans, so absolutely", Handel told The Associated Press after taking a congratulatory call from Trump Wednesday morning.

Wrapping up his speech, Zuma said: "If tomorrow you (ANC) say that I should step down, I will do so with a pure heart". The so-called National Day of Action protests are scheduled to coincide with Zuma's 75th birthday.
