Calif. Gunman Targeting Whites Chose 3 Men at Random: PD

The man suspected of killing three white men in a racially motivated attack in Fresno has a criminal history with arrests starting when he was 13.

He was deemed competent in August 2006 and pleaded guilty to the charges of cocaine possession with intent to distribute and a weapons charge. David Martin Jackson, 58 shot and killed outside of the Catholic Charities office on Fulton Street.

He was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2005 for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm for drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, after a Fresno police officer searched his auto and found two large bags of cocaine, a loaded handgun and two rifles, court records show.

Muhammad shot at another white man who had just walked out of a house, but he missed. Police say Muhammad, who is black, singled out white victims and killed them at random. "Not get rid of them as in kill them", his father said.

Charges against Muhammad, who is accused of gunning down four people, including three in a harrowing shooting spree Tuesday, are expected to be brought Thursday in Fresno County Superior Court, officials said.

During the arrest, Muhammad shouted "Allahu Akbar", or "God is great", but the shootings had "nothing to do with terrorism in spite of the statement he made", Dyer said.

Stephen Hughes, 66, said he and his wife rushed home Tuesday after receiving a frantic call from a neighbor.
