Bill O'Reilly forced out at Fox News

Bill O'Reilly forced out at Fox News

Carlson's tweet came a couple hours after 21st Century Fox announced that Bill O'Reilly would not be returning to Fox News amid accusations of sexual harassment and buy-outs to prevent accusers from speaking out.

The New York Times reported April 2 that five women had been paid a total of $13 million to keep quiet about unpleasant encounters with O'Reilly, who has denied any wrongdoing.

NY magazine reported Wednesday that executives were preparing to announce O'Reilly's departure before his return from Italy and were holding emergency meetings to discuss how to sever the relationship without damaging the network.

O'Reilly's attorney claimed on Tuesday that his client - a long-time conservative media icon - had been the target of a "smear campaign" financed by leftwing activist organisations.

The news was discussed by Howard Kurtz, Fox's media analyst, during a segment on the network's 6 p.m. program "Special Report".

IBM sends S&P 500, Dow lower; Nasdaq advances
The S&P 500 sank into the red in the final two hours, joining the Dow which had fallen into negative territory earlier in the day. Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.16-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq , a 1.83-to-1 ratio favored advancers.

"That left CNN and MSNBC to figure out how to survive, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that MSNBC figured out the only path to success was to segment and go for the liberal audience", said Tom Hollihan, a professor at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California.

O'Reilly's pugnacious personality wasn't just an onscreen affectation, with one of the settlements going to a woman who complained about being shouted at in the newsroom. O'Reilly was alleged to have slowed the careers of women who spurned his advances. Personalities on news programs change all the time.

That multiplying effect gave O'Reilly a role in a seismic change, he said.

Owners Rupert Murdoch and his sons Lachlan and James said in a memo to Fox staff that their decision to axe O'Reilly came following an "extensive review" into the claims. More than 50 advertisers withdrew from his prime-time show, and 21st Century Fox asked a law firm to investigate a complaint from a woman who said O'Reilly dropped efforts to make her a contributor in 2013 after she turned down his invitation to visit his hotel room.

"You need to write and call Fox News Channel today and tell them, you can lose your advertisers or you can lose your viewers", Beck said on his radio show hours before the firing. The books in his "Killing" historical series, including "Killing Lincoln" and "Killing Reagan", have consistently sold 1 million or more copies in hardcover, a rare achievement in publishing, and his platform on Fox enabled him to promote his work.

Smith also called on the cable news ratings leader to "release all employees from the mandatory arbitration and confidentiality clauses" in their contracts, which she says "have silenced women and kept the harassers, enablers and retaliators in place". Burke, a former Fox News correspondent in Rome, denied having facilitated the tickets. You failed him, you failed Bill O'Reilly.
