Gorsuch Hearings: Democrats hammer Republicans for failing to consider Merrick Garland

Democrats angrily condemned Republicans for refusing to act on Barack Obama's nominee a year ago, while Republicans accused Democrats of trying to turn Gorsuch's confirmation hearing into a referendum on the GOP president. Now, the Senate will exercise its "advice and consent" role, a politically fraught decision with liberals pressuring Democrats to reject Gorsuch. We will learn more during the Senate confirmation hearings.

In this February 14, 2017 file photo, Supreme Court Justice nominee Neil Gorsuch, center, accompanied by former New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, right, arrives for a meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017. President Obama's choices of Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan took the places of liberals. A look at the process. That was his opening statement a day ahead of expected pointed questioning from committee Democrats. And America First Policies, a group run by former Trump aides that has nevertheless been dogged by internal drama and funding problems, had also indicated it planned heavily on the Gorsuch fight - though its ability to do so is now in question.

His ruling, many experts said, contracted to some degree previous Supreme Court rulings that found monopolists like Microsoft could be in violation of antitrust laws by refusing to deal with rivals. Senate rules and tradition dictate the rest.

Republican Ted Cruz said there is no reason for Gorsuch to be questioned about Trump, noting that previous nominees have not had to speak about allegations made against the president who nominated them.

"The specifics of Judge Gorsuch's advice and role in these matters, as well as his views now, should be probed further", wrote Just Security founding editor Jennifer Daskal on Thursday. These are sometimes dubbed "murder boards" due to their intensity. After that, Gorsuch will finally speak, delivering his own 10-minute opening statement.

Eric Cantor: GOP, Trump 'will sink or swim together' on health care
I can hardly wait for someone in government to rise up and look past political party affiliation. Some 24 million fewer people would be covered by 2026.

"Democrats have failed to demonstrate a strong, unified resistance to this nominee despite the fact that he is an ultra-conservative jurist who will undermine our basic freedoms and threaten the independence of the federal judiciary", they wrote. Chuck Schumer of NY, the Senate minority leader, said in one characteristic tweet on March 16.

Who is Neil Gorsuch? In the past, one of the first to testify has been the chair of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary.

Grassley said the panel is likely to vote on the nomination on April 3, with the full Senate vote likely soon after.

The Senate's 52 Republicans appear to be in lockstep behind Gorsuch.

Gorsuch is expected to have support from more than half the Senate, but getting to that vote will require several procedural maneuvers. "He and (adviser Stephen) Bannon create so many distractions that what traditionally would have been a great fight - a Supreme Court nomination one year after Republicans would not allow a vote on a Democratic nomination - seems like an afterthought".

Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, defended Republicans' move to block Garland.

If the nomination is blocked, McConnell has another option.

At least 60 senators must vote to end debate and hold a final vote on Gorsuch's nomination.

Last week, the department turned over to the Judiciary Committee roughly 150,000 pages of documents related to Gorsuch's tenure there-and as The New York Times reported Wednesday, they show Gorsuch was "at the center of both litigation and negotiations with Congress" over issues including detainee abuses, military commissions, warrantless surveillance, and the Bush administration's broad claims of executive power.
