Md. senators urge President Trump to reconsider budget cuts to NIH

Stephen Ginsberg, Nathan Kline Institute and NYU School of Medicine, noted that the budget proposal raises a larger question of how research is valued.

An estimated $5.8 billion in cuts to the National Institutes of Health in President Donald Trump's proposed budget has California's top universities and medical institutions sounding the alarm.

In 2016, another $115 million came from the National Science Foundation.

The recent increases in NIH funding have been a bipartisan effort, with strong support from Republicans, including Missouri Sen. Few were expecting a great budget year for the NIH or other science agencies.

For example, the budget would likely force cuts to the CalFresh food stamp program, which helps to feed more than 10,000 Marin residents.

It would also follow a serious blow dealt to the agency from 2013 sequestration cuts. The cuts, if approved, would leave the NIH with a budget of $25.9 billion and would involve a major reorganization of NIH institutes and centers to refocus resources on "the highest priority research and training activities", according to the Trump budget plan.

Forget appraisal! Cognizant might fire more than 6000 employees this year
Officials said the actual number of employees dismissed will be known by March 31, once the company's appraisals are completed. Cognizant had given pink slips to its employees in large numbers, during the previous year also.

The proposed cuts "are indefensible and would severely impede our progress" toward finding a cure for cancer, said Gary Gilliland, president and director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, during a news conference.

This would be the wrong time to cripple biomedical research in the USA when the true potential for impacting the health of the nation through research has never been greater.

"When you see such drastic reductions in federal spending, it discourages students from completing or pursuing STEM degrees", Carney said.

The agency, which distributes funding to some 300,000 scientists worldwide, has seen its funding wax and wane over the last 20-odd years. "Other countries are going to look more desirable".

NIH officials declined to comment on Trump's budget blueprint, but its parent agency, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, released a statement saying the agency is "dedicated to fulfilling our department's mission to improve the health and well-being of the American people". Among the changes, the Fogarty International Center, which fosters international global health research under the NIH umbrella, would be eliminated. "Cuts this deep threaten America's ability to remain a leader" of biomedical innovation, he says. The budget by the Trump administration, will also lead to the reorganization of numerous institutes and NIH study centers, which would focus mainly on the resources required for training activity.

NIH is already under-funded in real dollars relative to the pool of meritorious grant applications and the growing number of young investigators who are struggling to sustain their research programs.

Testifying On Trump's Wiretap Claims
The Justice Department on Friday sent documents to the committee related to Trump's claims, which both Reps. Based on "everything I have up to this morning - no evidence of collusion", Nunes told Fox News.

According to the blueprint reports of the White House Budget, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has received a 50 percent cut.

Those offices make grant awards or even operate research facilities on the campuses of research universities. "Failure to nurture the historic USA investment in research places health outcomes, scientific leadership and economic growth at risk", ASCO said. "If these trends continue, the US risks creating an innovation deficit and losing its status as the global innovation leader". It's not clear whether NSF or defense research would be affected; Trump has proposed a major increase in military spending.

According to Wendy Naus, the executive director of Consortium of Social Science, the NSF is another agency which is expected to face a budget cut of almost 9.8 percent. "We're turning the clock back rather than preparing for the future", he said.

"By undermining these surveys, you're undermining the quality and credibility of the data", remarked Naus.

I was disappointed to learn that the president's first budget proposal includes deep cuts to medical research. Republican Hal Rogers, the former chairman of the House appropriations committee, said after the budget document's release last week that numerous cuts outlined were "draconian, careless and counterproductive". He also serves on national scientific advisory committees for organizations such as the National Institutes of Health. However, Congress has time until the end of April to voice its opinion before the bill gets passed in 2018.
